Travel Guide

If you are planning a trip to lesser-known or off-the-beaten-path locations, you may need to consult additional resources. If so, you know the value of good travel planning information, particularly when editorially independent, like guidebooks. With so many options, your most challenging decision will be choosing the right one. If you have even more time, it’s worth getting away for a bit longer or traveling a bit farther. There are weekend trips I adore, but if you can only take one I recommend the Cotswolds or Kent.

The area is also heaving with clubbers on weekends, and from Hooker Hill also sprouts “Homo Hill”, Seoul’s only real gay area. Looking north from Gwanghwamun, one can see little but cascading palace roofs and the mountains beyond. Looming up are the ranked masses of high-rise blocks that announce Seoul’s main business district, its walkways teeming with black-suited businessfolk. However, there’s more to the area than one might expect – two palaces, a few major museums and art galleries, and one of Seoul’s most charming roads.

  • You can visit the tower’s observation deck for dazzling views of the city.
  • Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley and other cast members visited Ireland’s unique filming location…
  • If you have more time, you can truly immerse yourself in the culture and lifestyle of Venice.
  • To enjoy Greek beaches and hot weather, travel between June and September.
  • If you are on a tight budget, you should supplement this book with additional resources.
  • A regular passenger train service from The Soo to the remote francophone township of Hearst three times weekly was suspended in the summer of 2015.
  • It’s good to have a price that you wish to pay in mind, but be prepared to be flexible on dates and stopovers.

Out from Edinburgh’s Centre

Not far from the city, Changhua is noted principally for its Great Buddha Statue, and atmospheric Lugang is celebrated for its craftsmen and classical architecture. East of Taichung, picture-perfect Sun Moon Lake makes a fitting introduction to Taiwan’s mighty central ranges, a place for languid lakeside walks and gorgeous views. Just outside Puli, to the north of the lake, Chung Tai Chan Monastery is a man-made wonder, a remarkable blend of modern architecture and Zen Buddhism. Heading south, Chiayi provides a staging post for the cool valleys and Tsou villages of the Alishan National Scenic Area.

Its peacefulness and standout beauty attract many, along with the city’s great restaurants and places to visit. After three years of living in Sweden and countless weekend trips to Copenhagen (seriously, I’ve lost count at this point!), I’ve fallen hard for this city. It’s the perfect blend of historic charm and cutting-edge design, with a food scene that will blow your mind and enough cozy corners to keep you exploring for weeks.

In principle, a national park preserves an area of outstanding natural beauty, encompassing a wide range of terrain and prime examples of particular landforms and wildlife. Thus Yellowstone has boiling geysers and herds of elk and bison, while Yosemite offers towering granite walls and cascading waterfalls. A national monument is usually much smaller, focusing perhaps on just one archeological site or geological phenomenon, such as Devil’s Tower in Wyoming. Altogether, the national park system comprises around four hundred units, including national seashores, lakeshores, battlefields and other historic sites. The National Park Service administers both national parks and national monuments. Its rangers do a superb job of providing information and advice to visitors, maintaining trails and organizing such activities as free guided hikes and campfire talks.

Dwarfed by Tate Modern, but equally remarkable in its own way, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre is a more or less faithful reconstruction of the polygonal playhouse where most of the Bard’s later works were first performed. The theatre, which boasts the first new thatched roof in central London since the Great Fire, puts on plays by Shakespeare and his contemporaries, using only natural light and the minimum of scenery. To find out more about Shakespeare and the history of Bankside, the Globe’s stylish exhibition is well worth a visit. You can have a virtual play on medieval instruments such as the crumhorn or sackbut, prepare your own edition of Shakespeare, and feel the thatch, hazelnut-shell and daub used to build the theatre.

From best places to travel to best gadgets to carry, it is a very informative source that educates travelers on how to best prepare for an upcoming trip. Besides this, you can also find articles on travel advice, top destinations, and other travel-related subjects on the website. So, even if you are planning the trip by yourself, Rough Rides is a good place for inspiration. • Much of Moscow’s geography is defined by the 3 ‘Ring Roads’ that circle the city at various distances from the centre, roughly following the outline of the walls that used to surround Moscow.
  • For Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, they drove coast to coast to coast for 150-days to create a mini travel series about Canada and a mini-documentary about what makes Canada special.
  • Some of those areas are notorious for gopniks (drunkards notorious for muggings and starting fights with strangers, and will do so seemingly unprovoked), who normally hang out in sparse residential areas and in industrial zones.
  • While the old-fashioned London caffs are a dying breed, the city has plenty of great little places where you can get quick, filling and inexpensive meals – especially good at lunchtime, most of them are open in the evenings too.
  • At the end of a gorgeous rose garden is Seokjojeon, which was designed by an English architect and built by the Japanese in 1910; the first Western-style building in the country, it was actually used as the royal home for a short time.
  • One line begins at CST (VT), running up the east side of the city.
  • For a rapid appraisal of Miró’s entire oeuvre, look in on the museum’s Sala K, whose 23 works are on long-term loan from a Japanese collector.

Seoul finally ended up under South Korean control, though most of the city lay in ruins, but despite – or perhaps, because of – all these setbacks, there has been no stopping it since then. Lisbon is a year-round destination, with warm summers and mild winters. Hot summer temperatures are cooled off by the Atlantic breeze, while in winter they never reach the freezing point.

While the city also has modern trams, enjoying the charm of the old-fashioned trams is a cheap and easy way to add some character to your visit. This massive 10-acre garden is a haven from the hustle and bustle of the city. Completed in 1873, it’s home to some 18,000 species of plants, including plants from New Zealand, China, Australia, Japan, South America, and more. It’s one of the best green spaces in Lisbon and perfect for relaxing. During these periods, the weather is pleasantly mild, and the city is less crowded than in the peak summer months (July and August).

Otherwise, expect to pay €10–20, though this usually includes your first drink (if there is free entry, don’t be surprised to find that there’s a minimum drinks’ charge of anything up to €10). Tickets for gigs run from €20 to €50, depending on the act though there are cheaper gigs (€5–20) almost every night of the year at a variety of smaller clubs and bars. Some of the 25,000 athletes and spectators who had turned up stayed on to join the Republican forces. Miró’s friend, the architect Josep Lluís Sert, designed the beautiful building that now houses the museum, a permanent collection of paintings, graphics, tapestries and sculptures donated by Miró himself and covering the period from 1914 to 1978. For a rapid appraisal of Miró’s entire oeuvre, look in on the museum’s Sala K, whose 23 works are on long-term loan from a Japanese collector. Here, in a kind of potted retrospective, you can trace Miró’s development as an artist, from his early Impressionist landscapes (1914) to the minimal renderings of the 1970s.

Berlin for LGBTI*

Along and around the Royal Mile, meanwhile, several distinctly offbeat places sit among the tacky souvenir sellers. Edinburgh’s only regular market is its impressive farmers’ market, on Castle Terrace, immediately west of the castle, which draws around 35 local produce stalls from south and east Scotland. Edinburgh has a greater choice of accommodation than anywhere else in Britain outside London.

It’s a must-visit for its lively Chinatown and scenic waterfront areas, offering a different vibe from Tokyo’s urban intensity. Crossing back over the river, Akihabara awaits with its unique blend of the old „electric town“ vibe and the cutting-edge manga and anime culture, making it a fascinating spot for tech and pop culture enthusiasts. It’s the best way of experiencing the diversity of the Japanese capital. A great starting point for exploring Tokyo’s numerous attractions is a leisurely stroll around the Imperial Palace. This area, which is the emperor’s sacred residence, offers a direct connection to Japan’s history.

Arts, culture and entertainment in Barcelona

At the start of this period (known as hanami) flurries of falling cherry blossom give the city a soft pink hue and by the end the temperatures are pleasant. October and November are also good months to come; this is when you’ll catch the fireburst of autumn leaves in Tokyo’s parks and gardens. If you’ve got just 24 hours to explore Tokyo, kick off your adventure in Asakusa by visiting the iconic Senso-ji Temple. Stroll down Nakamise Street to grab some unique souvenirs and then enjoy a traditional Japanese breakfast at a local eatery. For a quick nature getaway, sacred Mount Takao is just an hour west of Tokyo, offering lush greenery and a peaceful escape. Then there’s Yokohama, Japan’s second-largest city, right next to Tokyo.

The slightly taller Mount Lutoke (2,797m), which lies on the opposite side of a 50km border shared with South Sudan, is also visible from several points in the park. This ruggedly mountainous terrain is broken by the Narus Valley in the southwest and the Kidepo Valley in the northeast. Equator-straddling Uganda has a warm to hot climate all year through with limited temperature variations but a strongly seasonal rainfall pattern.

Rising above the Forum, the Palatine Hill is supposedly where the city of Rome was founded and is home to some of its most ancient remains. In a way, it’s a greener, more pleasant site to tour than the Forum. Use GetYourGuide or Airbnb experiences to find walking tours, or look at this list.

Scarred by industrial complexes and crisscrossed by rail lines, Thunder Bay is not immediately enticing, but it does have enough of interest to make a pleasant stopover on the long journey to or from Winnipeg and points west. The most agreeable part of town is the few blocks stretching inland from behind the marina in Thunder Bay North, north of Central Avenue, where you’ll also find several good cafés and restaurants. Thunder Bay South is much less appealing, but on its outskirts is the city’s star turn, the replica fur-trading post of Fort William Historical Park.

  • But the style that you’re most likely to see – it’s practised in the open air all over the country – is the internal tai ji quan.
  • By the early 1900s, Hamilton had become a major steel producer and today its mills churn out about half the country’s output, though the city’s industrial heyday has faded and in recent years it has struggled to keep itself afloat.
  • One company, National Express, runs most of the intercity coaches, and four other large regional companies run networks of local services.
  • Each region has its own best time to visit, making it somewhat challenging to pinpoint a single ideal time.
  • As is the case with other comparably lofty East African mountains, the vegetation of the Rwenzori can be divided into several altitude zones, each with its own distinct microclimate, flora and fauna.
  • Most popular with tourists are the streets around Insadonggil, where restaurants almost exclusively serve traditional Korean food in an equally fitting atmosphere.
  • Also there is unlimited tickets for 1, 3, 30, 90 or 365 days which is very useful, if you plan to use public transport a lot.

Among fabulous Oriental treasures in the north wing, closest to the back entrance on Montague Place, are ancient Chinese porcelain, ornate snuffboxes, miniature landscapes, and a bewildering array of Buddhist and Hindu gods. Although the nave is crammed full of overblown monuments to military types, burials in St Paul’s are confined to the whitewashed crypt, reputedly the largest in Europe. The crypt’s two other star tombs are those of Nelson and Wellington, both occupying centre stage and both with more fanciful monuments upstairs. The glory of south London is Greenwich, with its nautical associations, royal park and observatory (not to mention its Dome). For variety and scale, the V&A is the greatest applied arts museum in the world. Have a pint of traditional real ale in one of London’s many old and historic pubs, or visit one of the craft brewhouses that are popping up over the capital.

The 22 regions of France are further divided into departments of France and these contain the 35,800 places in France – usually towns and villages. Coming into the city by car can be confusing and isn’t advisable unless you’re used to driving in Italy and know where you are going to park. Buses run till around midnight, when a network of night buses comes into service, accessing most parts of the city and operating until about 5.30 am. South of the centre, Testaccio is well endowed with good, inexpensive trattorias. The Testaccio Market is a major highlight but the whole neighbourhood is generally great for traditional Roman food. Embark on a scenic adventure along the historic Appian Way, one of Rome’s ancient roads.

Both were designed by William Henry Playfair (1790–1857), though the exterior of the National Gallery is considerably more austere than its bold Athenian counterpart. Making reservations is worthwhile at any time of year, and is strongly recommended for stays during the Festival and around Hogmanay, when places can get booked out months in advance. The haunted heart of old Edinburgh, with tenements, closes and catacombs piled up cheek-by-jowl. For some truly chilling storytelling, book onto a ghostly underground tour of Edinburgh’s vaults. Turkey’s leading contemporary arts gallery, İstanbul Modern, is housed in a revamped warehouse on the edge of the Bosphorus, just in front of the Nusretiye Camii.

The Kentucky Derby, held in Louisville on the first Saturday in May, is the biggest date on the horse-racing calendar. Also in May, the NASCAR Indianapolis 500, the world’s largest motor-racing event, fills that city with visitors throughout the month, with practice sessions and carnival events building up to the big race. Baseball, because the Major League teams play so many games (162 in the regular season, usually at least five a week from April to September, plus the October playoffs), is probably the easiest sport to catch when travelling. The ballparks – such as Boston’s historic Fenway Park, New York’s famed Yankee Stadium, LA’s glamorous Dodger Stadium or Baltimore’s evocative Camden Yards – are great places to spend time. It’s also among the cheapest sports to watch (from around $10–15 a seat for the bleachers), and tickets are usually easy to come by. Most parks and monuments charge admission fees, ranging from $5 to $25, which cover a vehicle and all its occupants for up to a week.

  • From detailed transportation guides on reaching Budapest by bus, plane, or train to invaluable local tips, we ensure your journey is smooth and enjoyable.
  • To visit the more atmospheric and overgrown West Cemetery, with its spooky Egyptian Avenue and sunken catacombs, you must take a guided tour.
  • There’s not much to see in the shopping zone north of the cathedral, but a century or so ago a tavern called Els Quatre Gats (The Four Cats; c/Montsió 3, ) burned brightly as the epicentre of Barcelona’s bohemian in-crowd.
